need help with religion issue and giving money away to charity

retirement verses
bugbeacon2 asked:

My elderly father is giving away more than a quarter of his retirement income to a well-known religious charity. He is on a fixed income and has major health issues (a degenerative disease). My frail mother is not in great shape either and is the one to take care of him. He refuses to pay for medical procedures and home health care that would help him and ease the burden on her because he says he cannot “rob God” and that his money needs to go to God. He says he is sending what I would regard as astronomical amounts each month to this charity because he didn’t tithe to the church and now needs to make up for it and this organization “saves souls.” This is not about me – i don’t need his money. But I do think family comes first and he should spend some money on his own health care and the well-being of my mother. then, whatever he has left over, he is free to give away. How do I get him to see this? I have tried to say that God wouldn’t want him to give away all his money if it was needed for his health and my mom’s health, but he just doesn’t get it. It all just seems like a giant “f you” to all of us, but mainly my mother. Are there any Bible verses I can point out to him that would addrses this issue? Any words of wisdom?
if it was just my father and his health at stake, I would agree that he can do whatever he wants with his money. But when there is a dependant, elderly spouse who is killing herself taking care of him (he can’t do anything for himself anymore) and neglecting her own health because she can’t leave the house for fear that he will hurt himself, then I think the issue is different. I don’t think God rewards you based on how much money you give. It’s how you take care of others around you. I would never ask or even think it was my palce to ask him not to give anything away. But when it is hurting someone else that he is legally and morally responsible for, and answerable to God for, then I think the situation changes.
