Gift question for a older gentleman (co-worker of husband) who is undergoing a very serious operation?

coolmama asked:

My husband works with a man of retirement age who is going to have open-heart surgery tomorrow. We want to reach out to him and let him know we care but don’t know if the typical ballons/flowers gift would really mean all that much. If there are those of you out there who have undergone a very serious operation (and are also male) do you have any good suggestions? Just the thought of visiting him when he is going to be in so much pain gives me pause to think he may not appreciate people popping in from work “to see how you’re doing.” I don’t know– on the flip-side it’d be pretty sad if no one did anything and he felt like no one cared. Anyone have experience here that could offer some good advice?
